... By your powers combined, I am... OK, OK we all know the rest. Well, at least all of us that were kids in the 90s do. The cartoon raised national awareness of environmental issues. That was ten odd years ago. Yet, how is it, that with scientist unraveling more and more environmental mysteries, are planet is getting sicker? Al Gore filmed a documentary depicting global warming. Now, it is trendy to be a tree huger. "Hurry before it is too late," they urge, "buy organic, switch to solar power, non-toxic paint is now available." Corporate America realizes that there are big bucks to be made. Saving the planet is profitable. Think green! But, in another ten years, where will we be? Didn't our government make a move for recycling a decade ago? Weren't "Save the Whales" programs launched? Did they not warn us about cutting down rain forests? How successful have those been?
Man-made materials are everywhere...
Whales are still endangered...
Rain forests are diminishing...
What would lead you to believe that the next ten years are going to be any different? Maybe the animated paladin is going to step in and intervene when 5 ring bearing kids from different areas of the globe throw there fist in the air? Seriously.
In an election year, the nominees sex and race has been more prevalent than environmental issues. Our bad economy is distracting us from what is really important. Places are being ravished by natural disasters. Mother Nature is fighting back. The human species is involved in a war that it will not win.
We can not blame the politicians. It is not their fault. Organisms will get away with whatever they are allowed to.
Honestly, I do not know what to do. I have a few ideas. None are substansial, not yet anyways. There is one thing that I have figured out though: I need money. I am starting this blog with priority number one being to make a positive impact on our ecosystem. My second goal is to make profit. I am earnest.
As a child, I believed in altruistic incorporeal ideals. Those proved to be fruitless. Even, Gaia knew she had to equip the kids with certain powers. The truth is that if I have $10 and require $7 living expenses, I might want to save $2 for a rainy day, leaving me with only one dollar to donate to a good cause. Or, I have 2 or 3 free hours to do some volunteer work, but it will be much more beneficial to pay 10 people to work for 3 hours. At the end, the result is what will matter, not the intention.
So, I think there is nothing wrong think economically. There is, however, a lot wrong with saying you are going to do something and not following through. A lot is wrong with misleading people. A lot is wrong with losing sight of the bigger picture.
I can not allow that to happen.
My sights are set on the oceans, at least at first. It is like the thermostat of the planet. If we can take care of that, everything else will start falling into place. Wish me luck.
